we are looking for muralists for an artistic residence program in June 2024

About the Residency

We are currently accepting submissions from muralists for a 2 weeks artistic residence program in Ondarroa, Bizkaia (Spanish State). The residence includes room and board in a unique coastal town in the Basque Country, tours, workshops, a gallery and studio at the artists disposal. Artists will be given two weeks to get to know the village, its people and its history and on the third week initiate a mural that has been inspired by their stay. Murals will be installed on walls 15m x 8m and artists are required to have a lift licence. Every year 2 artists will be selected to participate. Selected artists will have all of their expenses covered including airfare and material.

Eligibility
This project is open to International artists and artists from the Spanish state over 18 years of age, with a focus on female muralists although it is not a specifically female residency. The Commission encourages applications from both new and established artists. Artists may apply as an individual artist or as a group. Group submissions may be for a single wall.

Mural Specifications: 

  • The walls will vary in size, from 8m long x10m tall, to 8m long x 15m tall.

  • All walls will be accessible through boom/genie lifts which will be provided by the organisation

 

Insurance & Indemnification
Selected artists must sign a Release of Liability and Indemnity Agreement. 

 

Dates
Artists should plan to paint their mural in the second week of the residence.

Process

Selection Process & Criteria 

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee. Once the artists are selected, the committee will send a notification by email.

Criteria used to select artists will be: 

  • Evaluation of artistic excellence including quality of the art and artist originality.

  • Ability to paint large scale murals in a timely manner. 

  • Attention to history, heritage, and cultural representation represented in prior works.

  • Appropriate regard for the audience.

Submission Requirements:

  • website or online portfolio with images of previous work. 

  • 3-5 images of previous mural or public art work or artists portfolio

  • a short paragraph describing method and how the artist works within the community.

How to Apply

All applications should be submitted via email kaminazpimurales@gmail.com. Proposals will be reviewed by the oganisation and all personal information will be protected. All items must be included as part of the submission package or applications will not be reviewed.
